Pointless: The Scorch Trials

Goodreads
The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end.

Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch.

There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die.

The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.

Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off.

There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive.

Rating: 1/5

There's a huge difference between a thrilling adventure mystery that keeps you on your toes and a dull "suspense" that makes you want to throw the book out of the window for good measure.

The Scorch Trials, unfortunately, is number one on the latter.

We were supposed to get some enlightenment - even just a little bit - about what's happening and yet in The Scorch Trials, any existing answer whatsoever to the billion present questions becomes buried deep under more stating-the-obvious questions again and again and again and again.

Hell, every chapter includes a 2-3 sentence paragraph of pointless questions that normally begin with 'why?'.

There is no heart stopping climax, no mind messing revelations. It's just: Wake up. Walk. Ask questions. Insert quick conversation regarding questions stated before. Sleep. Repeat.

I am not even going to begin how most of what Thomas, friends, and frenemies' actions do not make sense or add up to anything. There's no solid ground that should make me believe whatever they're doing, no matter how nonsensical. (Here I am, skipping the rant about character development and how Thomas is worst shank there is.)

Even though I only watched the Maze Runner movie, I had hoped that even some of the action and hype from the adaptation follow through to the book sequel.

Guess not.

I have never been more bored, annoyed, and let down.

Let's just hope The Scorch Trials movie does its source material the proper justice.
